Transformation: How Does it Happen?
This is the third devotional in a series on renewing the mind. To read the first two devotionals, click the links below.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
The Greek word for transform in the verse above is metamorphoó, which is the root of the English words “metamorphosis” and “metamorphize.” [SOURCE] Remember the life cycle of the butterfly from elementary school – egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
Keeping the butterfly in mind, transformation means a thorough and dramatic change in form, appearance, or character. Bringing it to our Christian walk, transformation refers to a thorough change in our thoughts and attitudes from the inside out as a result of our relationship with Jesus Christ and His Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
If you are like me, and you were born again as an adult, the people who knew you before you met Christ should be able to see a change in your life. There should be a difference between you before Christ (BC) and you after Christ.
After I gave my life to Christ, I experienced an immediate transformation from the inside out. There was a definite and marked difference in my behavior and outlook on life. However, I still had to grow and mature as a Christian. (And I am still growing and maturing!!!)
There was still tons of growth and transformation ahead of me, so I started my journey of renewing my mind and replacing lies that I previously believed with the truth of God’s Word. I continue changing how I think to align with God’s Word. As I stay consistent, the Holy Spirit transforms and changes me from one level of glory to another.
Obviously, transformation is not a one-day-and-done experience. I have learned and continue to learn to remain patient with myself and bask in the comfort of the Holy Spirit as God works out the kinks in my soul. I am grateful that I am not where I used to be, as I also look ahead to where God is taking me.
And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18
Reflect
- What did your transformation look like when you were born again?
- In what areas of your life is God inviting you to change from the inside out?
Prayer
Father, I am so grateful that You saved and called me to glorify You with my life. It’s a relief to know that You love me too much to leave me the way I am. Thank You for Your mercy, grace, and patience towards me. I lay down my self-will and emotions and ask that You transform and change me to think and act like my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, through the power of Your Spirit, who lives permanently in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen!!
