The Benefits of Renewing Your Mind
This is the second devotional in a series on renewing the mind. To read the first devotional, click HERE.
Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Colossians 3:9-10
Renewing our minds helps us overcome habits and attitudes that are contrary to God’s will. This involves filling our minds with God’s Word by studying, meditating, and obeying the Word consistently.
As we commit to saturating our minds with God’s Word and acting on it, we become more alert to the things that please God. We become so conscious of His Word that Scriptures spring up within us and come to our remembrance each time we are tempted to stray.
When we focus on spiritual things and choose to live by the leading of the Spirit, the Holy Spirit empowers us to let go of bad attitudes and habits that previously controlled us. We become mature Christians who exhibit the fruit of the Spirit in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23).
We stop letting our minds be flooded with negative imaginations that lead to mental, emotional, and physical destruction. Instead, we yield to the leading and direction of the Holy Spirit and enjoy His peace (Romans 8:6).
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16
We become Christians who fully know our rights and privileges in Christ. We resist being tossed back and forth by false doctrine (Ephesians 4:14).
Finally, to be transformed into the image of Christ, we must approach God’s Word with humility, committing to not only study the Word but to obey it from our hearts (James 1:21-25).
I invite you to join me in committing to renewing our minds and transforming into the image of Christ from one level of glory to the next (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Reflect
- What are some temptations and peer pressure confronting you today?
- What actions will you take to transform and become more spiritually mature?
Prayer
Father, Your Word commands us to put off our old self. Please help us not to make excuses to remain unchanged. Through Your Holy Spirit, empower us to focus on and meditate on Your Word daily. And as we do, shine the light of Your Word into every area of our lives where we are sinning against You, and by the power of Your Holy Spirit, help us humble ourselves and exchange disobedience with obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
