Overcoming Adversity
As long as we live on this planet, we will surely face adversity. However, the Bible makes it crystal clear that as God’s children, we are overcomers through the finished work of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
To overcome adversity means that we yield fully to God, giving Him control over our circumstances so that they do not stop us, drown us, or slow down the calling God Himself has placed on our lives.
My last post was based on Apostle Paul’s instruction in Romans 12:12 to be “joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer.” If you missed that post, I strongly encourage you to read it here.
The purpose of this post is to list my favorite anchor Scriptures and make them readily accessible to you and me. I hope that as we meditate and renew our minds with the truth of God’s Word, we will surely overcome every adversity in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. AMEN!!

Victory Promises
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. 2 Corinthians 1:20
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 2 Corinthians 2:14 ESV

But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. Psalm 3:3
I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalm 16:8
The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14
“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.” Isaiah 49:16
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Isaiah 43:2
“…So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
“…For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” Isaiah 41:13
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. Isaiah 12:2
I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul. You have not given me into the hands of the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place. Psalm 31:7-8
Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. Psalm 62:1-2
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. Psalm 28:7
Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:25-26
The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Deuteronomy 31:8
He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” 2 Chronicles 20:15
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 1 Peter 5:10
Developing Perseverance and Character
Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4
Our Attitude During Trials
Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. Philippians 2:14-16
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Keeping a Heavenly Focus
For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18
I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Romans 8:18
In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuinenessof your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.1 Peter 1:6-7
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. James 1:12
In Conclusion
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are MORE THAN CONQUERORS through him who loved us. Romans 8:35-37

Nice write up
Mrs Idahosa. Interestingly I have been doing a study on adversity (suffering). I realise that they could be categorised into persecution, long term illness or health challenge, opposition /contradiction of ‘men'(social), financial difficulty. There would be specific scriptures to be employed in these varying circumstances so we do not pray amiss.
God bless you in your evangelistic efforts

Hello Emma,
Thank you for visiting my blog and taking the time to comment.
You bring up a great point and I fully agree with you that we should respond differently to different forms of adversity. For example, we should take a stand of faith against sickness based on multiple Scriptures including 1 Peter 2:24 but on the other hand, as Christinas, we should expect persecution to come our way.
However, no matter what type of adversity it is, I still find comfort and draw strength from the Scriptures above.
Please, feel free to comment at any time. Your insight is always helpful and I appreciate you watching my back.
