God’s Love is Reliable

God's Love is Reliable: A Devotional Study

God’s Love is Reliable

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” 1 John 4:16 NIV

When something is reliable, it is trustworthy, dependable, consistently good, and predictable. On the other hand, when something is unreliable, it is erratic, fickle, and unstable.

I grew up in Nigeria, where the power supply was, and remains, unreliable. Right-smack-dab in the middle of watching your favorite movie, ironing your clothes, or cooking, the power would go off with no warning and no guarantee of when it would return. I vividly remember racing, arms flailing in all directions, with my younger sister to the kitchen to blend tomatoes and peppers one time when the power came back after a long interruption. We didn’t know how long the power would last, and we both detested using the manual mortar and pestle to blend tomatoes.

Unlike the power source in my home country, God never shuts off His love in our lives. His love is constant and unending.

According to Isaiah 54:10, God’s love for us will remain steadfast even if mountains move and hills disappear.

“‘Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10 NIV

However, if we are going to enjoy the benefits of God’s love, we have to know how much He loves us and learn to rely on His love each day.

Keep the Switch of God’s Love Turned On

The power of God’s love is forever available to us, but we need to flip the switch and keep it on so we can enjoy it. As Jesus taught His disciples, we must remain in His love.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.” John 15:9-10 NIV

We remain in His love by spending time in His presence, praying, reading His Word, believing Him, trusting Him, and obeying Him. When we do this consistently, we learn to know Him, recognize His voice, and rely on His love.

Knowing and relying on His love enables us to face life’s challenges, forgive the unthinkable, and love the prickly people in our world.

When we keep the switch of His love turned on, life becomes less about who loves us, but more about who we can love with the same love we have received from God.

Reflect

How would knowing and relying on God’s love for you impact how you respond to people who either withhold love or are downright unloving to you?

Prayer

Lord, I cannot thank You enough for loving me consistently and unconditionally. Help me stay in Your presence and rely on Your love as I face difficulties and interact with my family, friends, coworkers, and strangers. Use me as a vessel through which the people in my world encounter Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
