Be Patient with Yourself
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18
The Holy Spirit teaches and helps us grow from one level of showcasing Christ’s glory to our world to another level and then on to an even greater level.
I used to go to bed at night with the burden of everything I did wrong during the day. (That was condemnation on steroids!) I have learned and continue to learn to be patient with myself. I accept that I will sometimes make mistakes.
When I became born again, I experienced a tremendous level of immediate transformation that was nothing short of miraculous. But I still do not represent Jesus Christ perfectly, and I have failed innumerable times to walk in patience.
When I fail, I ask God to forgive me. If someone else is involved, I ask them to forgive me (usually one of my daughters), and I am learning to forgive myself without dwelling in self-pity and condemnation.
So, don’t throw in the towel and give up on yourself. Patience does not develop overnight.
Wait on God and trust Him to transform you from glory to glory. You may not be as patient as you would like to be, but thank God for His work of transformation in your life so far and keep pressing on towards the mark.
Remind yourself that you have the Holy Spirit, who is ever willing and ready to help, teach, guide, comfort, and counsel you in every area of your life. Be grateful for every day and look forward with hope and faith to the next.
Reflect
- Have you struggled to be patient with yourself?
- Have you thrown in the towel?
- How can you keep pressing towards the mark?
Prayer
“May the Lord direct our hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.” 2 Thessalonians 3:5
